Located in Overland Park, Kansas, CCAR® is a not-for-profit corporation that was formally established in 1994 through the efforts of affiliate organizations representing all sectors of the automotive service and repair
industry.
Here's a look at what CCAR® offers the industry through some of its activities and programs:
- CCAR-GreenLink®, the National Environmental Compliance Assistance Center for the automotive industry, is available 24 hours a day through its Web site with search capabilities. The environmental information and best practices presented are designed to help automotive shop owners, managers, and technicians better understand their environmental responsibilities, and to help them achieve compliance with environmental program requirements. There is information that can help the owner, manager or technician decide on management strategies, technologies, materials, and methods that will reduce business costs and help manage hazardous wastes and related items.
- CCAR® sponsors an
annual Automotive Career Education Day (ACED) to encourage students to choose careers in the automotive service and collision repair fields. Since 1997, a specially-produced ACED video has been viewed via satellite downlink in thousands of middle schools, high schools and community colleges in all 50 states. The event, which is financially underwritten by the industry, is endorsed by every major national technical education society including ACTE, NACAT, NASDVTE, I-CAR, VICA and NVTHS.
- CCAR®'s efforts are directed at coordinating and encouraging the participation of its Affiliate organizations and other interested groups in activities and programs directed at accomplishing CCAR®'s purposes. For example, twice each year, the CCAR® Affiliates are brought together for the CCAR® Leadership Meetings to exchange information and focus on technician and environmental issues. Some of the other committees which CCAR® coordinates include a network of State I/M Coordinators, which CCAR® formed at the request of U.S. EPA's Office of Mobile Sources. The Network provides the State I/M Coordinators with a forum for the sharing and exchange of information. The CCAR® State I/M Coordinators Network usually meets twice a year and the meetings include representation by approximately twenty-five states, industry and the U.S. EPA's Office of Mobile Sources. The Communications Advisory Council, a group consisting of the leading publishers and editors of the automotive trade press, meets several times each year and focuses on how they can best support the CCAR® mission and works to assure the wide distribution of CCAR-GreenLink® information to the industry. The Inter-Agency Council, a group consisting of representatives of eight federal agencies and departments, meets every year and exchanges program information dealing with the automotive sector with a particular focus on automotive service and auto body repair.
- CCAR® was selected by the US SBA, Office of Advocacy, as a "Model of Excellence" in 1999.
- CCAR® has been favorably recognized by the FTC and National Association of Attorneys General. They stated CCAR® "could serve as a useful model to address many auto related issues."
- CCAR®'s EPA Liaison Team was awarded the Hammer Award by Vice President Al Gore. This award is presented to teams of federal, state and local employees and citizens who are working together to build better government at less cost.
- CCAR®'s program, CCAR-GreenLink® has been commended by Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond (R-Mo.) as an excellent example of Federal/Private Sector cooperation in support of small business.
