The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued a Grants Pass man a total of $17,800 in penalties for various hazardous and solid waste violations at his salvage business at 450 Ament Road in Grants Pass.

Roger Harold Hansen, of 2801 Walnut Ave., Grants Pass, was penalized for failing to immediately clean up releases and threatened releases of hazardous material, for failing to determine if waste residues generated on his property were hazardous, and for placing wastes where they are likely to enter state waters. Upon its inspection of the salvage yard on Oct. 29, 2009, DEQ noted that Hansen was at that time storing various wastes on the property, without a permit. These included automobile lead-acid batteries, automobile mercury switches, oil filters, air bags, tires, computer parts, refrigeration units, washing machines, mobile homes, compressors, cables and boiler pipes. DEQ observed that waste oil and other lubricants, diesel, gasoline and antifreeze had spilled onto a concrete pad and soil on the property. Hansen did not have a containment system in pace to minimize releases of the waste fluids.
