Solvents used in paints include: toluene, xylene, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, ethyl benzene, ethyl acetate, and butyl acetate. These solvents are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). OSHA has also established workplace exposure limits for these solvents.
